What happens during the class

  • We accompany real songs from the first level: coming in with the singer, holding it, and stopping at the right moment.
  • We learn the number system — naming chords with numbers — which makes changing key instant.
  • We work rhythm with a metronome, in the three gospel pulses: slow worship, praise, and the 6/8 sway.
  • The last two sessions of each level are used to prepare and then perform a song in public.
The progression

The path, level by level

6 levels, from the very first contact with the instrument to playing independently in a band. Each level runs 12 one-hour sessions.

01Beginner 1Laying the foundationsGroup open this session · Mon. 6–7 p.m. or 7–8 p.m., depending on the group

The student discovers the keyboard, reading rhythm, the gospel pulse and first major triads.

They gradually learn to accompany a simple song and to come in, hold and stop with the singer.

02Beginner 2Completing the basic vocabulary

The student works on minor chords, inversions and first accompaniment patterns.

They gradually learn to link chords without abrupt jumps and to add the first gospel ornaments.

03Intermediate 1Harmonising with intervalsGroup open this session · Mon. 6–7 p.m.

The student works on thirds, sixths and fifths, and discovers their first licks — short melodic phrases.

They gradually learn to place fills between sung phrases: the piano answers the voice, it never covers it.

04Intermediate 2Opening up the sound

The student works on the pedal, arpeggios and open voicings — a way to give a tight chord some air.

They gradually learn a method for approaching a song they have never played: finding the key, charting it, choosing how much to play.

05Advanced 1Extending the harmonic vocabulary

The student works on extended chords, passing chords and transitions.

They gradually learn to modulate — change key mid-song — and to place licks in the singer’s breaths.

06Advanced 2From playing to musical direction

The student works on reharmonisation, playing in a band, sound banks and the major gospel styles.

They gradually learn to lead a band: setting the key, opening and closing a section, backing the lead singer and the choir.

This path outlines the planned learning at each level. The starting level and schedule are settled at enrolment.See the frequently asked questions ↓

The Viva Sound experience

Learn, play, step on stage

We play together

From the first sessions we play as a group: listening to others, holding your part, coming in and out at the right time.

Serving the song

Our teaching is rooted in gospel and worship. Students learn to accompany a voice, not just to play notes.

A show at the end of the session

A full rehearsal, then a performance in front of an audience — this session, on Monday, December 14, 2026. That is where the work makes sense.

Frequently asked

The questions people ask us

Do we need a piano at home?

Having a keyboard at home helps a lot for practising between sessions. For the gear available during class, write to us before enrolling.

How do we choose the starting level?

On the enrolment form, you state the student’s level. Someone who has never played starts at the first level. If they already play, write to us before enrolling and we will work out the right group together. From the second level on, each level also starts with a review session.

What is my group’s schedule?

Classes are on Mondays. This session: Beginner 1 : 6–7 p.m. or 7–8 p.m., depending on the group; Intermediate 1 : 6–7 p.m.. For other levels the schedule is not set yet — write to us and we will confirm it before the first class.

What happens after I enroll?

You receive a confirmation email summarising your enrolment. We then get back to you with the practical details — group, day and time — before your first class.
